Shortform or longform: which video format makes sense when

August 13, 2026 · 5 min read
Short answer

Shortform up to two minutes is for getting found in the first place, longform from five minutes upwards is for building trust and answering questions. If you are starting out, begin with shortform, because reach is cheaper there. Longform pays off once you have an audience that is already listening.

The two formats solve different problems

The question is often treated as a matter of taste, but it is a matter of function. Short videos work against the indifference of people who do not know you. Long videos work against the doubts of people who already know you and are considering buying.

Almost everything else follows from that. A short video has to work within the first two seconds, a long format can take its time. A short video is rarely watched to the end, a long format is clicked on deliberately.

What it costs

The price difference is smaller than many assume. A short video at business scope costs 57 euros, a long format up to twenty minutes costs 97 euros. Per minute, longform is considerably cheaper.

The real difference is not the editing price but the work before it. Ten short videos often come out of one afternoon of footage. Ten long formats need ten well thought out topics, and that is the actual work.

Three mistakes that keep happening

  • Cutting up a long format and calling it shortform. An excerpt from a long video has no opening of its own. It rarely works because it lacks the hook in the first seconds.
  • Forcing vertical. Some content needs width, for example a product in its surroundings or a conversation between two people. A landscape video in a vertical feed beats a cropped image.
  • Starting with longform. A podcast without an audience is work without effect. Reach first, depth second.

A workable start

A mix that has proven itself in practice: ten to fifteen short videos for the first two months, plus one or two long formats on the questions clients keep asking you anyway. After that you look at what actually performed and shift the ratio.

What matters is that both can come out of the same material. Planning a shoot day with both formats in mind saves you the second appointment.

02 Questions on this topic
How long should a short video be?

For Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts, 15 to 60 seconds works best. Up to two minutes is possible if the content carries it.

Are long videos still worth it?

Yes, but not for reach. Long formats work on people who already know you and answer questions before a purchase. As an entry point into a new channel they are unsuitable.

Can you get both out of one shoot day?

Yes, if you plan for it. Working a shoot day with both formats in mind gives you short videos and long formats from the same material.
